The night passed tortuously slow as I sat on the bed, staring out the terrace of my given room. Under other circumstances, I would have been marveled by the expansive vineyards on the property, visible through the glass doors, or even scared by the unreasonably large bird I saw flying towards the house in the darkness.

Instead, I had spent the better part of the night in a battle to the death between my mind and my body. So much for thinking my rational mind was stronger than my urges. Although the dinner prepared by Rocio—the Peruvian lady that maintained the house—and the hot shower had helped me relax, it had done nothing to quench the need I felt to see the Vampiress.

I guessed that was one thing that was true from the Vampire myths of modern culture. No, they didn’t burn in the sunlight, and she’d eaten garlic bread just fine in her lunch during the flight here. Based on the gothic cross that constantly hung around her neck, I’d say she probably had no problem with churches or holy water either. Though we hadn’t tested that theory yet.

Still, she was compelling, devious, sensual, so flawlessly beautiful it hurt, and the pull I was feeling towards her, was one of the most powerful things I’d felt in a long time. Still, the only way I knew how to fight these urges her mere presence ignited, was to remain as objective as possible.

Thankfully, I had found a notebook in one of the desks on the vast suite, and a pen, so instead of thinking of finding her room in the middle of the night, and being close to her, I began to write down everything I’d learned so far.

What little I knew about her abilities made it onto the pages, her wings, the cocoon that had protected us, her claws and fangs. Her venom. Every single detail that crossed my mind, I noted, creating a conceptual, biological, and chronological journal of her.

Even if I hadn’t managed to sleep through the night, it was the only thing that gave me some sort of relief. Focusing on the facts and trying to understand, or prove what I couldn’t explain, had always given me security. What I could control, unlike… her.

I didn’t even know her real name. It was just a name, yet it bothered me to no end. I placed the notebook and pen on the bed and stood, anxiety coursing through me at the mere thought. A name. It was just a name.

Sighing, I returned to the journal and grabbed it once more, resuming the diagram of the Vampiress’ anatomy I had created. Each arrow indicated a different aspect of her, a different part of her body. Reaching her hands, the image of the wrinkled skin on her fingers while she was still injured returned to me, and I suddenly realized why the phenomenon seemed so familiar.

It uncannily resembled the texture found on the fingers of the specimen I had just uncovered in Cairo.
